On Saturday, November 17 at 8:00 pm at Blacknall Presbyterian Church in Durham Sonam (Singers of New and Ancient Music) will perform their debut concert. All of the proceeds from this concert will support KidZNotes. The founder of the chorus, KidZNotes Instructor Allan Friedman, thought the pairing of the two groups was a natural fit: “KidZNotes strives to create music with kids living in some of the most challenging areas of Durham. Sonam is dedicated to helping others through music and increasing awareness of worthy local non-profits.”
The mission of Sonam is to create high-quality sacred and secular choral music in a supportive and collaborative community. Sonam seeks to share their music with listeners of diverse socio-economic backgrounds through concerts, informal singing, and occasional tours.
The 16-voice ensemble will sing an hour-long concert of acappella renaissance and modern choral music on the theme of music. The choir will present the sacred and secular compositions of Byrd, Palestrina, Josquin, Lassus, Tschesnokoff, and others. Each of the selections in the concert celebrates the power of music in one form or another. From the mournful harps to jolly bells and from the the earthy songs of lovers to the hymns of the cherubim and serpahim, music has the power to move us in diverse and profound ways. The teachers and students of KidZNotes know this power and seek to spread it throughout the East Durham Community. 100% of the $10 suggested donation for entry will go to KidZNotes.
