Born and raised in the town of Coronel Fabriciano in southeastern Brazil, Mestra Tigresa (Alexsandra Frias) developed an interest in Capoeira at a young age and began training in 1986. She earned her Instructor belt in 1995 and soon began teaching. Beyond her training and teaching responsibilities, Tigresa participated in rodas and batizados throughout Brazil while also earning a certification as a personal trainer.
In 2001, Tigresa moved to the United States, where she continued to expand her knowledge and dedication to Capoeira. She earned the title of Contramestra in 2012 and was awarded the title of Mestra in 2022, recognizing decades of commitment to preserving and sharing the art of Capoeira.
As a Mestra, Tigresa teaches proper and safe techniques while emphasizing Capoeira's rich foundations of movement, music, dance, martial arts, and culture. She challenges her students to overcome both physical and mental limitations while maintaining the patience, encouragement, and sense of humor that have become her trademark as an instructor.
In addition to Capoeira instruction, Mestra Tigresa teaches Afro-Brazilian percussion, working with children, teens, and adults. Through music, rhythm, and cultural education, she helps students deepen their understanding of Afro-Brazilian traditions and the integral role that percussion plays within Capoeira.
Mestra Tigresa is also an active teaching artist in the community, partnering with the Durham Arts Council, CAPS (Collaborative Arts Project 21), schools, and community organizations. She leads summer camps, school performances, cultural workshops, artist residencies, and educational programs, using Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian music to inspire creativity, confidence, teamwork, and cultural appreciation among participants of all ages.
For nearly four decades, Mestra Tigresa has dedicated her life to preserving and sharing the traditions of Capoeira, empowering her students through movement, music, discipline, and community while honoring the Afro-Brazilian heritage that continues to shape her life's work.
