Charles has over a decade of experience in teaching and performing music. He earned a Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Teaching degree at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. Charles has taught both middle and high school bands and orchestras in Virginia and North Carolina, earning high praise in state assessments and helping students earn positions in Junior Eastern Regional Orchestra, All-County Band, All-District Band, and All-State Band. He now teaches full-time at Duke School, where he teaches Orchestra, Band, and introductions to instrumental music. 

Before returning to teaching, Charles spent eight years as an active duty musician for the US Army––the last four of which were spent performing and teaching across Europe. Charles has had the pleasure of performing in 14 different countries for members of the public and the US President, members of the English Royal Family, French President Emanuel Macron, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeyer, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and many other ambassadors, dignitaries, and consuls general. 

Charles remains active as a musician through his continued service with the North Carolina National Guard’s band, the 440th Army Band. In his free time, he likes to spend time with his family, learn foreign languages, play with his dogs, and work on his harpsichord.
