Mike Truzy is a musician and educator from Mount Olive, NC (Pickle Capitol!)  He first began his musical journey in the church choir at Evangelical Fellowship Center.  He was later able to perform in the school choral and band programs, the Goldsboro Boy’s Choir, and the Mount Olive University Community Orchestra where he played trumpet and baritone.  It is because of having access and great teachers and mentors that Mike decided to become a music educator.  Mike has been a Kidznotes Teaching Artist since 2011 and helped to establish the Mozart classes in the pilot program at Eastway Elementary.  He has served as the lead teacher for the Mozart program for several years and enjoys collaborating with colleagues and students.

Mike earned his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance with an Emphasis in Education and a Master of Arts in Teaching from UNC-Chapel Hill.  While at UNC-Chapel Hill Mike was a member of the UNC Men’s Glee Club, Carolina Choir, and UNC Opera.  Mike has taught in Durham Public Schools for the last 18 years.  He first began as the Durham School of the Arts choral director and currently serves as the music specialist at Eastway Elementary.  As a music educator, Mike earned the 2011 and 2015 Eastway Elementary Teacher of the Year.  Kidznotes also recognized Mike as the 2020 Kidznotes Teacher of the Year.  He has served as the music director for Evangelical Fellowship Center since 2008.

Mike loves serving the Durham community.  He has taught summer music camps including Kidznotes, The Durham Arts Council, and has served as the School Improvement Chair and School Improvement Data Manager for Eastway Elementary for 8 years.  Mike enjoys spending his leisure time with his family, cooking, and attending live musical performances.
